We all could use a vacation every now and then, even your dog!
I mean, could you even call it a โfamilyโ vacation if your four-legged friend isnโt along for the ride?
Dogs make the perfect travel companion, whether youโre looking to be more active during your vacation, trying to help the dogs acclimate to a new environment more easily, or just canโt imagine making memories without your pup joining in the good time.

Tip #1: Pack the Essentials When Traveling With Dogs
Pack it up, pack it in; let me begin to tell you how important it is to make sure you bring everything your pet will need during the trip. I mean, could you imagine showing up for your getaway only to find you forgot an essential like your phone charger, toothbrush, or creature comforts?
Your dog is just the same, and theyโll want everything theyโre used to while they join you in a new place. That includes any of the following:
- Food: Count out as much food as youโll need for your stay, but bring along a little extra for those โjust in caseโ situations.
- Treats: Treats make your dogโs world go โround. Donโt be caught without any.
- Leash: For walks, hikes, and other adventures, the leash is a must.
- Poop bags: Dog-friendly resorts may have bag stations where you can snag some freebies, but luck favors the prepared. Bring a few rolls to make sure.
- Crate: Your dog may not be welcome everywhere you plan to go. Even the best-behaved pooches may become anxious or destructive if theyโre left free in a strange environment. So, if you have a crate, it may not hurt to bring one.
- Comfort items: Does your dog have a special plushie or chew toy they love to play with or cuddle throughout the day? Make sure you grab it before you go!
- Medications: If applicable to your dog, definitely donโt forget the meds!
Dog-friendly destinations may cover you in a pinch if you accidentally leave something at home, or you may find yourself close enough to a pet retailer. But itโs better to just bring these things and focus your time and energy on having a good time!
Tip #2: Itโs All About the Journey
The old adage never holds truer than when talking about actually getting to your travel destination. Some pups are iffy about moving vehicles, and many have never been remotely close to a plane. For this reason, itโs crucial to consider how youโre getting to your destination and what you need to do to keep your pet comfy for the ride.
A high-quality travel crate is a must for car trips, while airlines may be more specific about what you need to purchase to transport your pooch. Not all kennels are airline-approved, and each airline has different specifications to consider. The criteria for what size dog is okay to bring to your seat is the same, with most smaller breeds being okay to join you on the plane and larger breeds being confined to below the aircraft.
If you will be taking your dog, peruse all information pertaining to your chosen airline before booking. Make sure you review the federal guidelines as well. You donโt want to arrive at the airport and be in for any surprises when your focus should be on getting through security and getting to your seat.
You may also consider consulting your vet before traveling. Not only is it prudent to make sure your dog is up to date on all vaccines, but they may have something to cool your dogโs nerves during the trip so theyโre not howling, barking, and whining the whole way. They may prescribe medication or recommend holistic remedies to promote calmness, so you, your family, and your dog may all enjoy some peace.
Tip #3: Donโt Forget to Relax!
Dogs are super intuitive, and theyโll pick up on your stress.
So, donโt forget, vacations are supposed to be fun and relaxing! Youโll do no one in your party, including your pup, any favors by being a ball of nerves from start to finish. Of course, traveling can be inherently stressful, andย bringing your dog along may compound that stress, but try your best to keep calm, cool, and collected.
Your dog will look to you as their owner, parent, and pack leader to determine how they should feel. If you exude confidence, they will pick up on that and be comforted by it.
