History of Burmese Cats
As the name suggests, the Burmese breed traces its lineage back to the Southeast Asian region known as Burma or, as it’s known today, Myanmar. A man named Dr. Joseph Thompson, a medical officer in the US Navy and established breeder of Siamese cats, journeyed to Burma and brought back a small, chocolate-brown cat named Wong Mau.
Wong Mau was predominantly Siamese, but genetic studies uncovered that she was, in fact, a hybrid with a then-unknown breed. So, Dr. Thompson bred Wong Mau with Siamese partners, bred the offspring together, and eventually created the first purebred Burmese cats.
In 1936, the Cat Fanciers’ Association officially recognized the Burmese breed as an official breed. Today, they’re widely popular and considered a common breed.
Temperament of Burmese Cats

Exercise for Burmese Cats

After all, a bored Burmese may take matters into their own hands -er, paws – and put that inquisitive nature to use, getting into all the stuff you don’t want them getting into, like your house plants, personal belongings, and other off-limits stuff!
Don’t give them the chance! Keep their bodies and minds healthy and active by providing plenty of exercise every day.
Grooming Your Burmese
Burmese cats are known for those silky, soft, sleek coats; thankfully, you don’t have to do too much to maintain that softness and luster.
All you really need to do is grab a soft-bristled brush and give them some TLC about once a week to remove loose hair and spread the natural oils generously from tip to tail. It’s a great practice to keep them looking their best, reducing how much your Burmese cat might shed. So, your furniture will thank you, too!
Vet/Medical Care for Burmese Cats

Burmese cats might’ve been a commodity 100 years ago, but times have changed, and the breed has never been more popular than it is today. So, don’t expect to have to hunt high and low to find this beloved and highly sought-after breed.
However, if you are buying from a certified breeder, you may have to shell out a pretty penny for the pedigree. Expect to pay between $800 and $1,500 for this distinguished status. But, if you want to save a few bucks, try your local shelters and rescues, as Burmese cats are a thriving breed, and you will likely spend significantly less by adopting rather than buying from a breeder.
Once you’ve selected and brought home your Burmese kitten, don’t rush them. Keep them secluded in a small area of the house at first while they get their bearings, slowly introducing new rooms, people, and things. After a week or so, you’ll see that confidence and curiosity come out in spades, and you’ll be well on your way to plenty of adventures with your new furball buddy!
